Getting into instrumental music isn’t for everybody, but there are ways in. Just like I tell people there’s a band out there for everyone, there’s an instrumental band to suit any genre and for every kind of taste.
Do you like your music aggressive and raw but still emotive and introspective?
This is a 2020 conceptual metal/ Hard rock understanding of current events, it surely wont be the only one eh, but it’s the first I’ve heard in this music genre.
Metal Militia is Joe Martin from Pittsburgh in the USA, putting it simply one man producing and playing throughout.
Im not going into similarities of what his riff work compares to or with to ensure you have a bloody listen for yourselves.
The opening of the track “Virus” serves to conjure the same sense of alarm then moving onto such inevitable subject matters like lockdown, riots, media disinformation, and insurrection seeming eventuating into an apocalyptic landscape that, appropriately, serves as the thematic concept of a pathogen conjured up by the sinister military industrial complex.
It could be difficult for some to fully appreciate it without a vocal lead on the subject matter, but feel the artist wishes you find your own way through the concept and see if it correlates to your own current predicament or experiences.
While I try an convey and international response to hearing Joe’s work, it will resonate in different ways for everyone.
For my take on it briefly, 2020 has definitely been a difficult year where the masters of control are pushing and pushing levers in the minds, finance and logistics of the "what the fuck should we do now syndrome".
Metal Militia isn’t widely known amongst metal fans outside the US.
Who can say why certain records attempt to obtain a hold of collective consciousness more than others? No matter – what’s important is that any fan of metal owes it to themselves a favour and give this album a serious listen.
Cerebral, apocalyptic pathogenically tinged doom riffs steeped in the influence of one of the most harrowing of year in recent human memory.
